Type: Cultural Center - competition
Year: 2014
Client: Tel Aviv University
Partners: Lothan Architects, AMMS

Description: Architecture is a meeting point between art and engineering, design and planning, social sciences and humanities, and between academia and the every-day life around it. It dictates and shapes the relationship between the individual and society and it gives material expression to the cultural context in which it is produced. Therefore, the proposed design of the new School of Architecture is based on defining different and multiple meeting points as a tool for creating a connection between the diverse fields of study and for creating an ideal learning environment. Accordingly, the design is first based on creating a connection to the nearby environment by relying on an urban façade, and by continuing the open public space of the university campus through the use of a green roof that will function as a gathering area. The interior arrangement is based on a central space shared by all studios and workshops that creates direct eye contact between all the workspaces and the different school years, and fosters an atmosphere of work, creativity, and mutual learning. The white envelope is a contemporary representation of Tel Aviv’s architectural heritage that also exhibits the various workspaces and functions within the building. In doing so, the emphasis on encounter and interaction, and on fluency and learning continues throughout all levels of the design, from the initial concept to the plan, the cross-section, and ultimately to the facade. Therefore, the proposed design is not only a space for studying architecture but also a space that teaches architecture
