(RE)LEVANT
Location: Levant region
Year: 2020
Project: Academic work
Being a crossroads between Asia, Europe and Africa, with access to the Mediterranean and sites of religious importance, the Levant is a place of constant battles. Today the Levant is a contested region, characterized by impermeable borders, conflict infrastructure and divided societies. Nevertheless, despite the ongoing conflicts, this project takes a counter planning approach, as it focuses on a shared network that is scattered around the region and constitutes a potential for future connection. This is the former railway network that was built during the Ottoman Empire and WWI. This project proposes to reuse the historic tracks as a backbone for cross-border cooperation and social interaction. While the railway infrastructure leverages the potential of new regional connections and flows, the historic local stations perform as shared public spaces where border-crossing, human interaction and heritage celebration take place.
